(Press Release) Assemblymember Henry T. Perea’s joint resolution urging continued federal funding of 144th Fighter Wing units in Fresno and Riverside was approved by a unanimous vote in the Senate today and in the Assembly last week.

“The 144th fighter wing is a vital part of our national security and the economy in the Central Valley,” Assemblymember Perea said. “I am glad my legislative colleagues joined me in making sure federal officials understand how important the 144th is to our community.”

Assemblymember Perea introduced the resolution last week along with Assembly Speaker John A. Pérez (D-Los Angeles) and Assemblymember Paul Cook (R-Yucca Valley) amid recent concerns about the effects of potential budget cuts to the federal defense budget on the 144th. It was unanimously approved by the Assembly last Thursday.

“Today’s action in the Senate is another strong, bipartisan indication of the need to keep the 144th Fighter Wing based in California,” said Speaker Perez. “This is an important issue for every Californian, and we are committed to ensuring our leaders in Congress and the Administration have a clear understanding of our commitment to ensuring the fighter wing remains in California”

“I hope this resolution sends a strong message to Congress and will raise public awareness about keeping the 144th Fighter Wing here,” Assemblymember Cook said. “If we’re passive about this, we’ll lose jobs and national security will suffer. This is a strong step toward retaining federal funding for the Fighter Wing.”
