Fresno Police: Officer-involved shooting suspect armed

By KSEE 24 News

The Fresno Police Department on Monday said the man shot by officers last Friday night in East Central Fresno was armed.

Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer and Fresno County Sheriff Margret Mims made the statement during a news conference Monday afternoon, disputing allegations from Michael Fang's family that he was unarmed.

Fang, 23, was shot by Fresno police officers outside a house on the 4,500 block of E. Normal Avenue.

Authorities said an investigation into a prior drive-by shooting led them to Fang's home, where officers were confronted by two armed suspects. Officers returned fire.

No officers were injured in the exchange. Fang was taken to Community Regional Medical Center and is currently listed fair condition. Fang has posted $110,000 bail.

Police said they are still looking for the second armed suspect in the case.

Both the Fresno Police Department and the Fresno County Sheriff's Department are involved in the investigation because the shooting happened in an area of Fresno considered a county island.

Fang has been charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon on an officer and one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer said Fang is a known gang associate.

In an interview with KSEE 24 News Fang's family said they do not believe he was in possession of a firearm.

Fang was the victim of a gang related drive-by shooting at the same residence on Maple and Normal in December of 2007.

During Monday's news conference Chief Dyer and Sheriff Mims commented on the fact that there have been three officer involved shootings in Fresno in the past week.

Chief Dyer said in all three instances, officers were in unmarked vehicles, trying to prevent crimes before they occurred.

Both Chief Dyer and Mims also said that any state budget cuts to local law enforcement would be detrimental to their fight against escalating violence.
