Jury finds man guilty of involuntary manslaughter

By Theresa Freed

A Fresno jury has found a Sacramento man guilty of involuntary manslaughter.

Scott Burch claimed the beating death of his co-worker last year was self defense after the defense said Laross Jenkins had tried to rape Burch.

The 21-year-old defendant cried repeatedly throughout the trial as his attorney described the alleged sexual assault. He was charged with murder. Jurors had the option of finding him guilty of first degree murder, second degree murder, voluntary manslaughter, involuntary manslaughter or they could have found him not guilty.

Jurors began deliberations last week. The verdict was announced Monday afternoon. Sentencing is set for next month.
