Mayor Autry announces plan to tackle mental illness in local schools

By Preston Phillips

It's been a week since 17-year-old, Roosevelt High School student, Jesus Carrizales was shot and killed by officer Junus Perry after attacking him with a baseball bat.

Shortly after this tragic incident occurred, we learned that Carrizales had a history of mental illness.

City officials say what happened on the campus is not unique to Fresno Unified, but Police Chief Jerry Dyer says calls like these come in much too often.

"This last year in 2007, we had 108 calls on high school campuses, in which there was some type of mental health issue/attempted suicide type calls,” said Jerry Dyer\Fresno Police Chief.

Calls that Fresno Mayor Alan Autry would like to see come to an end.

“We are woefully ill-informed and woefully ill-equipped to deal with this issue. That must change,” said Fresno City Mayor, Alan Autry, who today announced a six pronged approach that will deal with this issue of mental illness head on.

The first prong will establish a permanent partnership between the city, county and school districts.

The second will conduct thorough resource and needs assessments in each group.

The third will establish an effective communication system.

The fourth will work to seek new legislation.

The fifth… use proposition 63 funds for intervention and prevention.

And the sixth will be for legislation to direct funds to school safety and mental health issues for children.

"In the next few months, we will be putting nine more mental health clinicians in the Fresno, Clovis and central unified school districts,” said Fresno County Supervisor, Henry Perea.

Fresno Unified Interim Superintendant, Ruth Quinto says, "We do believe that this partnership will help us look at all services and our partner agencies."

Mayor Autry also plans to invite local faith based organizations to come forward and join this mental health partnership.

Meanwhile, Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer plans to meet with the Carrizales family on Thursday to answer questions surrounding the death of 17-year-old Jesus Carrizales.
