EXCLUSIVE UPDATE: Local politicians weigh in on soldier arrest

By Preston Phillips

Congressman George Radanovich believes that Fresno Army Specialist Richard Medina Torres has a good case.

Radanovich says his office, along with the state department has been in touch with the consulate in Mexico and is closely monitoring the situation.

For Fresno Army Specialist, Richard Medina Torres... The moment of truth is quickly approaching.

Tonight, he remains in Cereso Prison in Juarez, Mexico...

Waiting on a judges ruling that could keep him behind bars there for up to 15 years.

"This sucks... Like I was telling everyone... I'd rather be Iraq," says Medina Torres.

He was arrested on Monday after federal authorities at the Juarez, Mexico border found guns, knives and ammunition in his car.

He's now being charged with possessing firearms.

It’s an offense in Mexico that could mean up to 15 years in prison.

Today, local politicians weighed on what the soldier calls an accident.

"I do feel our government should go to his defense and should do everything possible to seek his release,” said assembly member, Juan Arambula.

Congressman George Radanovich believes the soldier has a good case and expects the judge will rule in favor of Medina Torres.

Radanovich also says his office is prepared if he doesn't.

"I think we need to let the Mexican authorities go through their judicial process. I think they’ll see that this was just an honest mistake... And we’re prepared in case they’re not… to step up the action," said Radanovich.

After federal authorities allowed Medina Torres to speak on-camera from inside the prison Thursday, we played it for his mom.

It was the closest she would get to being with her son on her birthday.

"This is my little boy... The little boy I knew," said the soldier’s mother, Gloria Medina.

Radanovich says, "I think that with the state department engaged, this gentleman is a U.S. soldier, his guns were registered, I think they’re gonna look on it favorably."

If the judge does decide to sentence Medina Torres, an immediate appeal will be made by U.S. authorities.
