Fatal Merced fire claims one life

A fast moving fire in Merced Tuesday morning claimed the life of one woman.

Firefighters responded to a trailer park in the 1900 block of Ashby around 8:30 a.m.

Three people were in the residence when the fire broke out. Two men managed to escape the flames, but a female who was trapped inside died at the scene.

A neighbor tried to extinguish the flames with a small fire extinguisher and a garden hose, but said the fire spread too quickly.

Investigators say the cause of the fire was accidental, but wouldn’t specify as to what exactly started it.

The two men were taken to a local hospital suffering minor burns and smoke inhalation.
