Fresno State Student Fees Raised

By Jennifer Brice

Fresno State Students got a bit of a jolt today, to hear university fees are going up despite student opposition. Students will soon pay $52 dollars per semester, to fund academic programs and athletics.

The amount was scaled down from an original proposal of $70 dollars a semester compared to what students pay now: $10 dollars to fund the same programs. Te news comes on the heels of an NCAA report showing the school's athletic department is failing to meet academic standards.

Fresno State President Dr. John Welty says this was a tough decision, but necessary to keep certain programs alive and running.

Of the $52 dollar fee per semester, $20 dollars will be allocated to the "IRA" academic projects and $32 dollars to the intercollegiate athletics programs. This announcement also comes on the same day several Fresno State athletic teams learn they are going to be penalized for low academic scores, called APR scores. The men's baseball and basketball programs will loose scholarships and practice time as a result of the scores. The APR is a four year average. Fresno State has actually improved in the year-to-year scores, but a couple of bad years in the past are causing the catch up.
