The future looks bright for 120 students from Fresno Unified high schools who attended a career fair at DeVry University in Fresno Thursday morning. The students were among a select group of seniors from ten Fresno high schools who were chosen to participate in a hands on career fair. The Chamber of Commerce along with representatives from 25 businesses worked with the students to help them write resumes, develop interview skills and find jobs.
Business owner and motivational speaker Steve Geil told the students that they can do anything they set their minds to. "Everybody can achieve their dream if this country if they want it and they're willing to sacrifice for it," he said.
Fresno High School seniors Lora Vang and Cynthia Vang went to the career fair armed with resumes and references. Both say they hope to find a job at the fair. "My plan is going to go to college at Fresno State and then hopefully find a job, a part time job, while going to school,"
Cynthia Vang says she also plans to go to Fresno State's nursing school. "I want to build experience and actually I want to find a job too."
Edison High School star quarterback Jerry Davis is headed off to University of Buffalo on a full ride scholarship but says he still realizes he needs to develop his job hunting skills. "I just want to learn ways to find a job, find out what I’d like to be."
Most of the students who attended the job fair aren't sure what career they want to pursue. Many plan to head out to the workforce right away. They eagerly talked with representatives from 25 valley businesses and educational organizations. They received expert advice on resume writing, and they participated in mock interviews getting feedback on the way they conducted themselves.
"The goal today is for students to come in and learn more about soft skills and what it takes to get a job and be prepared in the workforce versus trying to obtain a job. They need to know how to be prepared," said Kristi Cabello of DeVry University.
And after lessons on writing resumes... And mock interviews during which they received feedback on the way they conducted themselves, they will be prepared.
