New bill aims to help domestic violence victims

Assemblyman Juan Arambula is working to provide more help to local victims of domestic violence.

His new bill is geared toward immigrants, refugees, or victims in rural communities who don't have access to prevention programs.

The legislation is in response to an incident last year in which Hmong refugee May Yang was shot and killed by her abusive husband, who later turned the gun on himself.

The bill would allow counties to create an additional fine of up to $250 for people convicted of domestic violence crimes. The money would be used to expand existing programs and create new ones.

The bill has passed the assembly public safety committee and could go up for a vote on the assembly floor as early as Monday.
