19-Year-Old Girl Killed By Car After Pursuing Friend Into Street

December 9, 2012 Updated Dec 9, 2012 at 3:00 PM PDT

A 19-year-old girl was struck by a vehicle and killed while she was crossing a busy street in pursuit of a friend.

Jessie Winterholler and a couple friends had been driving to a party moments before she was killed when a verbal argument broke out in the car and the driver pulled over to the side of the road. One of the girls got out of the car to begin walking the rest of the way to the party.

She crossed the intersection at Nolan Avenue and Three Mile Road in Walker, Michigan, and Winterholler followed.

But Winterholler, a French culture enthusiast and student at Grand Valley State University, never made it across the intersection.

She was struck by a car driven by a 49-year-old woman whose name police have not released.
Authorities said alcohol or speed did not appear to be a factor in the Dec. 7 crash.
