Get ready for new cell phone driving laws

Starting tomorrow, people 18 and older can only use hands-free cell phones in California while driving, and those under 18 can't use them at all when they are behind the wheel. There will be no grace period and fines will start at nearly $80.

The new laws are intended to make the roads safer for all drivers by preventing distractions and stopping younger drivers from text-messaging while driving.

Those 18 or older will either need a plug-in earphone or a wireless bluetooth device to make and receive calls, or have a device installed that used the car radio to make hands-free calls.

Citations for first time offenses can be as high as $76 dollars and for further citations. close to $200.

There will be no grace period once the law goes into effect. Enforcement will begin immediately.
