Metal theft up in Fresno County

Tools

By Preston Phillips

As the value of metal increases, metal thefts are skyrocketing across the nation.

Here in Fresno County, thieves are cashing in now, more than ever before.

During the first four months of this year, there's been a 13 percent increase in reported metal thefts, from this time last year, and a 42 percent increase in the value and dollar value of thefts.

The Fresno County Sheriff’s Department says since 2005, metal thieves have cost the county more than $2,500,000, not including the cost to replace the stolen goods.

Recyclers say thieves are now targeting bigger and heavier items like iron, steel and tin; even brass plates on grave sites.
