God Bless you Rivera family your son made the ultimate sacrafice. Unfortunately he is not the last. More families will lose someone because the administration doesn't care. To those that have responded with he chose this life and it's hazards, mourn and get on with your life. Shame on you and to those who are in this business who are door holders when these kind of things happen..find another job. Your just as dangerous as the inmates. We are handcuffed to silence by working for this agency and need an outsider to help.

Not enough officers due to Director Lappins cost saving initiative when the war started the BOP uses officer to fill in sick and vacation spots. Where did these officers come from? Posts the BOP get rid of so now there is less staff per shift all to save a little on overtime. Thanks Lappin

I feel for the Rivera family, however this is a lesson that the bureau needs to learn. First of all, Harley Lappin is promoting all these people thatbelieves the inmates needs to be hugged and cuddled. then the staff who doesn't hug them and pamper them has to worry about the ones that will tell on them. I know there are people who knows what I am talking about. It is time that the higher ups realize what needs to be done before another staff member is seriously injured or killed.

I helped activate this prison several years ago as a C/O. We all knew it was dangerous having so many inmates to officers. There are up to 130 inmates to one officer. First Scott Williams and now Jose Rivera. I hope changes are done immediately before other inmates hurt more officers. The time for the kindler and gentler bureau is over! Letting the force pass is over rated. These officers need the tools necessary to run a prison the right way. Time to wake up and protect these officers.

Congress and the past and present presidentcies all think of the bottom line rather than officer and staff safety at federal prisons. The Bureau of Prisons considers its prisons to be appropriately stafffed when those who work behind the walls and fences know that their ranks need to be increased 100% on all shifts to insure staff safety. How many staff lives and inmate lives does it take for congress and the administration to get the picture?

Saturday, Jun 21 at 9:30 AM Fellow Officer wrote ...

Gone is the drama of the FBI, DEA, Homeland Security, and Task Forces. We watch over the bane of society after the headlines are gone. 1600 inmates with 30 staff on a shift. The funding gets dropped every year and the ratio continues to grow. How many officer's lives are worth increased funding, 5, 10, 20?? Our hearts are broken for our fellow officer. There are no words for the grief or rage that follows.

I too work for a prison and my heart goes out to those that are affected by this horrible act. It is a shame that this happens in our prison systems, because all of them are being understaffed and overworked. Those that limit staffing have probably never spent a day on a yard. We need help to fix this problem before more officers and free staff die. I am deeply saddened by this tragic event and my prayers will be with those affected.
