UPDATE: Fresno Police Dept. releases details of Chief Dyer's skin cancer

By Geoff Roth

News release from Fresno Police Department:

CHIEF DYER DIAGNOSED WITH SKIN CANCER

ENTIRE CANCER REMOVED, CHIEF URGES ALL TO USE SUNSCREEN

Police Chief Jerry Dyer would like to update the media on his personal medical condition
which made recent headlines.
Chief Dyer first contacted a physician on June 16, 2008 when he became concerned
about a red, dime-size mark on the left side of his head, near the temple. The doctor
suspected skin cancer and a portion of the lesion was biopsied.
On June 17, 2008 Chief Dyer was diagnosed with an ulcerated Basel cell carcinoma. The
next day Chief Dyer had a 2 cm by 2 cm lesion removed leaving an approximate 1 ½”
sutured area. Chief Dyer had his sutures removed on June 26.
According to Chief Dyer’s doctor, 100% of the skin cancer was removed. The cancer is
non-life threatening as is not the case with melanoma.
The doctor suspects Chief Dyer acquired the skin cancer from sun exposure. Chief Dyer
faces a 50% chance of reoccurrence.
This diagnosis has reminded Chief Dyer of the importance of wearing sunscreen and he is
urging everyone to apply sun screen as part of preventative measures against skin cancer.
