Not everyone got on board with the new cell phone law

By Geoff Roth

At 12:01 Tuesday morning, it was illegal to talk on your cell phone while driving without a hands free device. Most people seemed to be complying with the new law, but some didn't seem to know about the new restrictions and wound up getting a citation, and face paying fines.
Faith Sidlow reports.

The California Highway Patrol says distractions are a prime
reason people get into collisions. Drivers 18 and over must use a hands-free device when using their cell phone while driving. Text-messaging is not specifically banned for adults, but the California Highway Patrol said they can be cited for negligence under existing laws.

And if you're under 18, it's hands-off altogether. Drivers under 18 are prohibited from using a wireless telephone,
pager, laptop or any other electronic communication or mobile
service device while driving. They cannot talk on a cell phone,
even with a hands-free device, nor can they text-message. They will
be allowed to make calls in an emergency.

There is no grace period for violators. Beginning Tuesday,
anyone seen driving while holding a cell phone to their ear will be
subject to base fines of $20 for the first ticket and $50 for
subsequent tickets, plus additional fees that will more than triple
the fine.

Now there needs to be a law not allowing drivers to eat or put on there make up while driving! The handsfree law does not apply to law enforcement, as law enforcement is above all laws!

Although the law is a good one having a blutooth in your ear is just as distracting. I really don't see that it's going to make a lot of difference by way of safety.

i totally agree with Moss, many law enforcement workers are often on their cells also! Will someone stop them if seen talking? I think not!
