Carjacking suspect leads police on chase through Fresno streets

A carjacking suspect led Fresno police on a high-speed chase through town Tuesday morning, crashing three separate times before being arrested.

The pursuit began shortly after 10 a.m. when authorities received a 9-1-1 call from the Kohl's department store parking lot near Riverpark. An 89-year-old woman and a 63-year-old woman were getting in their car when, according to Fresno police, a man forced them to hand over some personal belongings, then drove away in their vehicle.

About ten minute later officers in north Fresno spotted the victim’s car, a Toyota matrix, and tried to pull over the suspect, identified as 22-year-old Renard Brooks. It was at that point that a chase ensued.

During the approximately eight mile chase, Brooks was involved in three separate traffic collisions. The first occurred at the intersection of Mckinley and Weber where Brooks struck a traffic barrier.

The second occurred at Weber and H Street, where Brooks sideswiped a van with two women inside. On of those women sustained minor injuries.

The third collision occurred just a few hundred feet away in the 400 block of H Street, when the car plowed through a nearby fence.

Brooks then abandoned the car and ran into an alley where police arrested him.

Once in custody, police found several of the victim’s stolen items in his possession.

Police said Brooks is currently on parole for being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. He was recently arrested on June 20 for violating that parole.

Brooks was booked into the Fresno County Jail on charges of robbery, vehicle robbery, felony evading, felony hit and run, and violation of parole.
