The Merced County Sheriff's Department is investigating two separate fights that broke out at the jail.

It started when the first victim led deputies on a small foot pursuit Friday night at around 7 p.m., in Winton. While attempting a vehicle stop for a routine traffic violation, the victim allegedly crashed his car into a porch at California and Cindy streets in Winton. The driver allegedly took off on foot and tried to jump a fence. Deputies were able to take him into custody after buck struck by a taser. The suspect was wanted on several felony and misdemeanor warrants.

While being booked, the 27-year-old Hispanic male said he used to belong to a certain gang, but has since dropped out. He requested to be housed with his former gang.

Four of his cell mates, who are admitted gang members, jumped him, beating him severely about the head and upper torso. Those allegedly involved in the incident include Daniel Rivera, 28, Merced; Luis Chavez, 18, Delhi; Christian Ruiz, 24, Delhi; and Carlos Arias, 18.

Sunday afternoon a second incident involving the same gang took place at the jail. A 23-year-old Winton man was beaten. Seven men are allegedly involved in that incident. Each faces additional aggravated assault charges.
