Clovis Police To Target Traffic Violators

The Clovis Police Department launched a traffic blitz starting on Monday.

The first phase of the operation involved a court sting. Police say officers were stationed inside and outside the courtroom. Divers who choose to drive to the courtroom with a suspended license or no license at all are subject to citations.

"The purpose of that is to keep unlicensed drivers off the road and to make sure they abide by their court restrictions and DMV restrictions," said Clovis Police Officer Mark Bradford.

Later this week, police say they will keep a close eye on drivers who speed, talk on their hand held cell phones, or do not wear seat belts.

"I want (my kids) to be able to feel safe walking around here and whenever I am in the car, I try to be as safe as possible," said Damaris Chance, a resident of Clovis.

Police say on Monday thirteen people were ticketed in a three hour period for speeding. Police advise residents to be attentive on the roads and be aware of the speed limit signs.

The new hands free cell phone law went into effect less than a month ago. So far, police say 36 people in Clovis have been cited since July 1st.

Police say the goal with this operation is ultimately to make the roads of Clovis safer.
