A Tulare County Sheriff's deputy was stabbed Thursday afternoon while serving an eviction notice to a man in a downtown Visalia home. The incident happened on Center Street near Recreation Park.

The suspect, Melvin Nicks, 50, then barricaded himself in the home for several hours before surrendering. Visalia Police say Tulare County Deputy Sergeant John Gray was at the front door he was attacked by Nicks and stabbed once in the upper chest. A standoff soon occurred, with the suspect exiting the home, and placed into custody.

Sgt. Gray was treated and released, suffering only minor injuries. The suspect is in the custody of the Tulare County Sheriff's Department.

The police activity around Recreation Park caused the Visalia Oaks to cancel their baseball game, saying they would reschedule it for a later date.
