State Employees Protest Possible Pay Cut

Governor Schwarzenegger is up against thousands of state workers who are outraged over his proposal to reduce their pay to minimum wages until lawmakers can pass a budget.

Workers organized a rally in the state Capitol Thursday, to demonstrate their opposition. State employees also gathered in Downtown Fresno to protest. They filled out "while you were out" notes for the Governor. They taped them to the door of his Fresno office.

The tug of war game between state leaders over the budget is reaching a crucial point. The Governor is putting pressure on lawmakers to cover the $15.2 billon shortfall in the State budget.

Republican leaders say they are working hard to reach an agreement, so the Governor does not have to take such drastic measures.

I feel sorry for the State workers, but, it could be worse, they could work for Ford, General Motors or other giants and get laid off or fired. A mere pay cut is a small price to pay for a good job, as we all know it won't last long and we will be protesting the State pay raises.

why doesnt he cut the lawmakers pay and take away their govenment cars, make them pay for their own gas and meals and see how much that saves the state.

Seems to me that we need to change the law and eliminate the legislators' per diem of $135 a day that they get for every day the session runs over. If they weren't still getting paid when they didn't pass a budget, they might work harder to get it done in a timely fashion. We'd also save millions and the average government worker wouldn't have their pay threatened every year.

I think that mr. clark probably could not get a state job at one point or another. I dont believe cutting the pay is any better than being laid off. It still does the same amount of damage to one's life.
