How to Protect Yourself from Identity Theft

By KSEE News

People across the country are wondering what they can do to avoid falling victim to identity thieves.

Authorities believe although the problem with the most recent hacker attack stems from problems in the stores' security, there are still steps you can take to protect yourself.

The identity theft crime rings in Fresno County are a growing problem. The sheriff's department has its own special team dedicated to credit card fraud and identity theft. The latest incident which has captured nation-wide attention sheds new light on how much damage just a handful of people can do who have the right tools and know how to take your information.

Federal authorities arrested 11 suspected hackers in what's believed to be the largest identity theft case to date. The people involved would use Internet online connections to steal account numbers at places such as Barnes and Noble, Boston Market and Target.

Chris Curtice with the Fresno County Sheriff's Department says you should act fast if you become a victim of identity theft. It is good to have a list of your credit card information with credit card numbers and contact numbers should you need to report the theft. If you notice anything out of the ordinary, report it right away to law enforcement and your credit card provider. Another good suggestion is to choose a password for your online accounts that combines numbers and letters.
