Caught on Tape, Hopefully

There are 523 liquor stores in Fresno.

It's estimated 60 percent of the stores are equipped with some sort of surveillance video system.

Chief Jerry Dyer voiced his concern at Tuesday's Fresno City Council meeting for the other 40 percent of stores without any surveillance protection.

If approved, a city wide police initiated ordinance would require all liquor stores operating in Fresno to be armed with high resolution cameras both inside and outside of a store.

A camera system would cost a total of $2,000 to $3,000.

Store owner, Harry Gill offered his support for the surveillance ordinance.

Gill's business partner was shot and killed seven years ago while working in their North West Fresno liquor store.

Fresno Police made arrests, but did not have enough physical evidence to prosecute.
Chief Dyer said if the store had a surveillance system, the person responsible for the homicide would most likely be behind bars.

After hearing the support for the mandate, council members did not approve the ordinance.

Council President, Blong Xiong, suggested Chief Dyer send Fresno store owners an informational letter on the specifics of the ordinance giving them a chance to offer feedback to the council before the mandate is voted on again.

If this saves lives and helps prosecute criminals and stops crime... why has it not been done or approved. Great Idea...
