Supporters Rally Over Proposition 8

By KSEE News

The effort to make marriage defined as between a man and woman a constitutional amendment, took place in Fresno. Proposition 8 supporters held a town hall rally hoping to mobilize valley opposition to gay marriage.

The valley effort to pass Prop 8 got underway Thursday night at Pardini's in Northwest Fresno.

The 2000 passage of Proposition 22 defined marriage as between a man and women. On May 15th of this year, the California Supreme Court, on a 4-3 vote, overturned that vote. On June 17th, marriage licenses were issued to same sex couples in California.

The California Family Council president is spear heading the statewide Prop 8 effort saying, "only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California". There is concern from the council that the judges overturned the voters, and says same sex couples already have domestic rights.

Governor Schwarzenegger has come out against making Proposition 8 a constitutional amendment. Prop 8 is one of 12 ballot measures voters will consider on November 4th.

It shouldnt matter that someone believes a marriage should be between a man and a woman. Fine go ahead and feel that way but dont force it on me. Let me live my life with the person I love and love that person the way I want to. Let me enjoy the same rights you do. I am a human being. I want the samethings out of life that you do. So please stop trying to make everyone fit into certain mold. I dont believe abortion is right. But I most certainly would never force that on any woman.

The language of Proposition 8 does not accurately describe the reality of heterosexual marriage, which recognizes serial polygamy. It should be amended to read, "only marriage between one man and one woman at a time is valid or recognized in California."

I would like to hear someone talk about the rights of children to have a father and mother, rather than all this talk about "me, me, me, me" and the supposed personal rights to violate any law, no matter how sacred, and call it freedom. How many of our founding fathers would agree with this definition? None.

Just to correct "a concerned citizen" who posted on September 19th at 6:04am, pastors will NOT be forced to marry same-sex couples even if it's against the doctrine of their church. Religious groups have the right (protected under the constitution) to recognize or REFUSE to recognize religious marriages based on their particular faith. Unfortunately, it's an untruth the Yes on 8 campaign has chosen to use as a scare tactic to rally troops.

The issue is not homosexuality. It is marriage. Even in Ancient Greece, where homsexuality was an accepted part of the social fabric, marriage was between a man and a woman. 5,000 years of collective memory and any amount of modern research has proven the value of the traditional family. Society has a vested interest in preserving this. A more personal concern is liberty, the right of religious freedom and freedom of speech which are thrown to the winds when gay marriage becomes law.

It's simply a matter of fairness. Amending the constitution to legitimize discrimination is wrong. Treating all people equally is right.

The reasons Californians should reject homosexual marriage are: 1) no society in history that has embraced homosexuality has survived, 2) even natural selection demonstrates that nature dis-favors homosexual unions as they cannot reproduce with heterosexual assistance, 3) the logic used to support homosexual marriage can and will be used to support polygamous and mixed group marriages, 4) homosexual marriage forever denies the children of these relationships the love of a mother AND a father.

If Prop 8 doesn't pass, pastors will be forced to marry same-sex couples, even if the doctrines of their church oppose homosexuality. Practices, which are contrary to the church's doctrine, will be imposed on them. Another thought: a couple in a marital union, through their love, bears the fruit of their love with children, the natural outcome of their love. Gay couples cannot bear their own children, except by artificial means, and with only one of the partners. This is not true marriage.

Chino Blanco, nice to see you again, even if your distorted message hasn't changed. Everyone else, you can find information and distributable media to help spread the facts about Prop 8 on this website: prop8voterinfo[dot]blogspot[dot]com. All of the above comments are answered there, including civil rights questions, homophobia accusations, effects of gay marriage on our culture, etc.

As a gay Californian who is proudly getting married on October 4th, I ask: What gives you the right to interfere with my personal decision to marry the person of my choice? Fair is fair. If you have the right to interfere with my private life, then I have the right to interfere with yours. In other words, I deserve the right to vote on YOUR marriage!

i cant believe you people! in school we were all taught that americans are given the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. so why hold people back from the ones thye love and want to move to the next step with when all they want is happiness? i am 16, bi, and very proud of it, because its who i am. and when i have kids i want them to know that we live in a nation that lets people be who they want and be WITH they want.

I agree that Prop 8 should be passed and I hope these town hall meetings continue. I don't want my 5 yr. old taught in school that gay marriage is OK. As a rank and file member of the LDS church, I'm glad we've come together with those who disagree with us on the important issue of the definition of marriage. Vote our church out of existence? LOL. That's clever, but now let's return to the serious topic of protecting traditional marriage.

This would not ever even be an issue if the left media, did not keep shoving gay garbage at us . we can,t even watch conservitive shows anymore. They areruining all traditional values and morals. So they can make there sin acceptable. We have already voted that marrage is a man and woman the left just don,t give up. I am one california mother who thinks my 5 yr old should not be exposed. Who wants to be asked why are those two men kissing. It still turns my stomach.

Proposition 8 is not against the gay people in California. It is about preserving traditional marriage. If this proposition isn't passed then teachers will teach our children about gay marriage in our schools. That is intruding upon my rights as a parent. Another thing that is disturbing is that in other states where same-sex marriage has been legalized churches and adoption agencies have had to close their doors because they haven't compromised their religious beliefs. Please vote yes on 8

No one in California can get a marriage license that says "husband" and "wife" (or even "wife" and "wife" for that matter). Instead on your 25th anniversary you can get a card for your dearly beloved "Party A." That not just a crummy form. The problem is that this is how the Court rewrote the law. Even Log Cabin Republicans should vote "yes" on Prop. 8. Check out: http://thetownscrier.blogspot.com/

Just a heads up: Mike Huckabee recently gave an interview in which he holds Mitt Romney responsible for implementing gay marriage in Massachusetts. Video here: http://chinoblanco.blogspot.com/2008/08/huckabee-romney-responsible-for.html Welcome to the ProtectMarriage.com coalition. I wish that more rank and file members of the LDS (Mormon) church would realize: the anti-gay coalition they've joined in California is one that includes folks who - given the chance - would vote their churc

I don't need further respect and dignity - I'm straight, happily-married, and ashamed of those whose prejudice is so obvious. According to Frank Schubert, 'Yes on 8' campaign manager, the mobilization of LDS (Mormon) volunteers could save his campaign up to $26 million in costs related to micro-targeting persuadable voters. Micro-Targeting Mormons: http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/8/24/61932/7927/663/573944 So much for campaign finance rules. Go ask your gay friends if DP = marriage.

Chino Blanco - can you remind us which rights same-sex couples are denied in CA under domestic partnership laws? Don't sell a lie. The rights are equal by definition. The reason the supreme court overturned Prop 22 was explicitly not for rights, it was for respect and dignity. So please let the voters know you have the rights, you just want the respect and dignity that husband and wife have.

It's not so much that we're fighting against homosexuals having rights, they have the right to choose how they live. What i think most Californians are against is when homosexuals are forcing us to accept them, whether we agree with their lifestyle or not, and by going to our schools and confusing our children against the morals we've already taught them. All we're doing is fighting back and not letting ourselves get walked all over.

Baloney. They already have that right. They can marry. They want a special right which re-defines the concept of marriage. I'm glad some people have the courage to stand up and fight this. What's next? Multiple partner marriage? Consenting adult incest?

Prop 8 is supported by 65% of Fresno County residence according to a recent ABC poll. My guess is that it passes statewide 55-45% which is about where most internal polls have it and between the higher support levels the LA Times found and the lower levels that the Field Poll found.

So sad to see so many Californians wasting so much time and effort just to deny gays the same right they already enjoy.
