Rumors swirl around future of Fresno Falcons

The Fresno Falcons have been given a two-day extension by the ECHL Hockey League, so its struggling owners can decide what to do with the team.

But tonight, fans say they're becoming restless over a rumor that's spreading like wildfire.

Preston Phillips reports from inside the Selland Arena.

Phillips: “Rumors are swirling among Falcons fans that the team could fold mid-season. Many fans are furious, especially those who hold season tickets."

Josh Chambers, Falcons Season Ticket Holder: "I'm a die hard fan; we never miss a game unless we’re really sick or something like that."

Josh Chambers was one of several season ticket holders in attendance at Friday night's game between the Falcons and the Stockton Thunder, and one of several concerned that this first place team could be forced off the ice for good, come Monday.

Chambers: “This whole scenario is really aggravating, I could kind of understand if the team wasn’t competitive. But they are competitive and really good."

Shari Brown says she's attempted to contact the city for answers, but says she was told to stop e-mailing them.

Shari Brown, Falcons Season Ticket Holder: "We're the last to know, that's what's upsetting."

Friday night, Falcon's CEO John Tull declined to comment on-camera due to illness, but told KSEE 24 News that Falcons owners haven't even told him what's going on.

What we do know, is that the Falcons are currently losing $10,000 a game, because people just aren't showing up.

Attendance has gone from 5,000 to 3,500 a game.

Friday night's attendance seemed even worse.

Empty seats could be seen all over Selland arena.

Phillips: “The Falcon's owners have just two days left to make a decision, a decision that could put the Falcons in the hands of a new owner or the City of Fresno. Of course if a decision isn't made, the ECHL Hockey League could take over the team.”

If the Falcons were to fold mid-season, it could cost other teams in the league, hundreds of thousands of dollars, because many games would have to be cancelled and schedules re-worked.

I for one used to go to a couple of games per month when they were at the Save Mart Center. I have not gone to a game this year and am a huge hockey fan, just cannot see why they moved back downtown from the premier facilty in Fresno?
