New info on MIA Los Banos Police Chief

KSEE 24 News has learned that Los Banos Police Chief Chris Gallagher has been off the job for 5 months because of a series of allegations of discriminatory actions made by the city's police union. What is still unclear is why he continues to receive his full $136,000 a year salary.

Gallagher has been off the job since August 1st. City Manager Steve Rath continues to say he cannot talk about the matter because it is a personnel issue. But sources tell KSEE 24 News, the complaints filed against Gallagher are what caused his absence.

Many people in Los Banos are upset, including the rank-and-file police officers, because the city is planning to cut jobs in the police department and other city offices due to budget problems, while Gallagher continues to get his six-figure salary.

The city council voted to eliminate 7 officers, 2 dispatchers, and 4 community service officers. The city manager says that right now, Los Banos is spending $200,000 a month more than it takes in in revenue.

Both police union officials and citizens say they are concerned that a cutback in police services will cause a resurgence in gang activity in Los Banos.
