A Merced County toddler who was mauled by a dog has died.

The incident happened Friday in the 9000 block of Donavan in Delhi.

Officials say the child was being watched by his babysitter, when the sitter's 65 pound pit bull grabbed the child by the throat and dragged him around the yard.

The babysitter told deputies she had to stab the dog with a fork several times to get it to release the child.

The sitter then called 911, and began to drive the baby to a hospital herself.

That's when deputies stopped her for driving erratically, and the child was rushed to the hospital.

The baby was then taken to Children's Hospital in Madera County, where he later died.

Animal Control has quarantined the dog and will hold it up to 10 days until they decide what to do with it.

So far, no charges have been filed in the incident.

You guys are the dumb. Pitbull are one of the best dogs to have around kids. The only reason this is in the paper is because its a pitbull. There are tons of dog attacts by other breeds all the time but they never get put in the paper. My cousin was bitten by a Lab right in the face for no reason, but did that get put in the paper? no! You people are just jumping to conclusions.

That dog is clearly a mix breed and no one can predict the temperment of a scrambled gene pool. I would like to see a pedgree on that dog before it is labled a pit bull.

Before we lay blame on the dog or the sitter, we need to know the full details. This could have happened with any breed. The public needs to be more educated on pitbull breeds and so does any individual desiring to become an owner of one. Owning a pitbull or any other dog is a huge responsibility. Instead of outlawing the breed, lets get better laws in place on who can own a dog period.

It was a tragic accident that we are now all living with. Thank you to those of you for your thoughts and prayers through this difficult time.

People need to realize that regardless how you raise these dogs their natural instinct is to attack not to cuddle. Gina you need to read more. These dogs are not family dogs. They are born with agression that it period.

i have a dog thats half german shepard and half pitbull and he looks just like this dog. and believe me people he is agressive towards children thats why i dont let them go outside.his job is to keep the house secure and he is doing a pretty good job....these dogs are the most barbarious dogs ive ever known, no matter how well they are trained they snap and there is no stopping them. so be sure to have a fire arm in youre house if you have one of these dogs!!!

No Gina, it does NOT depend on how you raise them. Haven't you read anything on how pit bulls came to be? Let that be your assignment for tomorrow. They should be outlawed.

I DO BELIVE THERE's GENETIC LINKED TO AGRESSIVE OR BEING NONE AGRESSIVE . BUT ONE CAN BE CORRECT . I WOULD HAVE THE DOG PUTDOWN FOR ONE RESONE ONLY IT HAS TASTED . HUMAN BLOOD . I KNOW THATS COLD HEARTED BUT THE KID IS DEAD.
