Fresno police shot and killed a man Wednesday morning who they say threatened officers before they opened fire.

Police Chief Jerry Dyer called the incident a "classic case of suicide by cop."

According to police, around 9:45 a.m. the man made two calls to dispatchers, during the first he threatened to shoot any officer who came near him, in the second he threatened to kill himself.

When officers arrived on the scene at Santa Anna and Marks, Dyer said they saw the subject with a silver object in his hand which they identified as a handgun.

It was at that point the man ran towards officers and pointed the gun directly at them, Dyer said.

The two officers then fired what Dyer described as "limited rounds", striking the subject an unknown number of times.

One of the officers began performing CPR, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.

Dyer said upon further investigation of the handgun that was found next to the man's body, it was determined the gun was actually a replica, and not a real weapon.

At this point police are only identifying the man as a 38-year-old white male.

This officer involved shooting is the second in as many days. On Tuesday Steven Vargas, 32, was shot by a Fresno PD officer after a traffic stop. Vargas repotedly refused to comply with the officer's requests and witnesses had reported he was armed with a knife, but it was later determined that Vargas had no weapons.

The shooting marks the 10th officer involved shooting in Fresno this year. At the same time last year there were eight.
