Unemployment Up in Fresno County, Valley

The unemployment rate in Fresno County was 18.2 percent in January 2010, according to a report released by the California Employment Development Department.

This is up from a revised 16.6 percent in December 2009, and above the year-ago estimate of 15.0 percent.

Unemployment rates were just as grim elsewhere in the valley:

Madera County increased from 15.0% in December to 16.6% in January
Tulare County increased from 16.5% in December to 18.3% in January
Kings County increased from 16.7% in December to 18.2% in January
Merced County increased from 18.3% in December to 21.7% in January

The unadjusted unemployment rate for California is at 13.2 percent, with the average nationally at 10.6 percent during this same period.
