9-year-old Girl Faked Abduction to Cover Up Her Tardiness to School

A 9-year-old West Philadelphia girl told school administrators she was the victim of an attempted abduction, ostensibly to cover up her tardiness to school.

The young girl retracted her fantastical claim once police arrived at the school to investigate, authorities said Thursday.

After the child and her parents were interviewed at length by the Special Victims Unit, police determined her story to be ‘unfounded,’ said unit Captain John Darby.

She apparently thought that she would get in trouble for being late and made up the attempted-kidnapping scenario to avoid punishment, a source familiar with the case said.

Police would not elaborate on why the girl made up the story.
