A man pointed a gas pistol at a politician delivering a speech in Bulgaria's capital today.

He walked on stage as Turkish minority party leader, Ahmed Dogan, was speaking and pointed the gas pistol at his face.

The man was struck before he could pull the trigger, and was wrestled to the ground.

Police identified him as a 25 year old Bulgarian national of Turkish origin.

He was carrying the gas pistol and two knives.

Gas pistols are non-lethal weapons used for self defense.

But experts say they can cause life threatening injuries when fired at close range.
