(Press Release) At about 1:00 p.m. Thursday afternoon, Fresno Police officers were dispatched to Fresno and L Streets for the theft of a white City of Fresno utility truck that had just occurred. Witnesses said a woman had jumped into the Ford F-450 and drove away eastbound on Fresno Street.

15 minutes later, another city worker saw the pickup being driven recklessly near 3rd and Nevada and notified police that the suspect ran from the vehicle in the area of Nevada and 2nd.

Officers and a K-9 unit converged on the area and saw the suspect, 28-year-old Evelyn Desiree Chavez, running into an apartment. Officers tried to contact the occupants of the apartment, as Chavez ran out the back.

She was captured shortly thereafter without further incident. Chavez was taken to the Fresno County Jail to be booked for vehicle theft, receiving stolen property, giving false information to an officer, and several outstanding felony warrants.

The city truck and associated tools were recovered at the scene.
