Central valley farmers are using up the underground aquifer at an unsustainable level, according to a new report out of Sacramento.
The study, conducted by the University of Texas, shows that even in wet years, the draw-down of the aquifer is happening at an ever-increasing rate. While a large portion of the Midwest corn belt is withering through a severe drought, California is in a similar position because of recent federal water use decisions and the naturally-occurring wet/dry cycle which this past year was very dry.
21 California counties have been designated disaster areas because of dry conditions.
