Campus police shot and killed a 38-year-old male graduate student on the Cal State University San Bernardino campus on Saturday, Dec. 8, officials said.

Lt. Paul Williams, of the San Bernardino City Police Department, said campus police responded to a disturbance in a common area around the University Village dorm in the 1500 block of West Northpark Boulevard at 6:39 p.m.

When police responded, the student, identified as Bartholomew Williams, went back towards the dorm and they contacted him in the hallway.

Lt. Williams said there was an altercation in which the student became violent toward officers, who shot the student in the torso.

The man was declared dead at the scene and an officer was taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries suffered during the altercation.

The identity of the victim was being withheld pending family notification, Lt. Williams said.

The City of San Bernardino Police Department will be leading the investigation.
