Border Patrol agents say they have arrested a Canadian man who paddled into the United States in a canoe.

The 38-year-old man is now in custody after being picked up early Thursday walking out of Fort Niagara State Park in Youngstown, north of Buffalo.

'He had a desire to go to New York City,' U.S. Border Patrol spokesman Michael Scioli said. 'He stole a canoe from a residence in Niagara-on-the-Lake and ventured across.'

Authorities say the man admits stealing a canoe from a residence in Niagara-on-the-Lake in Ontario.

Using a shovel for a paddle, they say he made his way across the lower Niagara River in the dark, a trip of less than a mile.
