The future of a large area in south Fresno County has been decided. The planning commission approved the Carmelita mine project by a vote of 6 - 1.
1,500 acres of land near Reedley was at stake. The land is owned by Gerawan Farming.
They will now convert most of the land into an aggregate mine. The company says Fresno has a shortage of building materials.
Nearby residents dispute those projections. They're also worried about pollution and yet-to-be completed traffic projects.
The board of supervisors has the right to appeal the planning commission's decision.
