Chewing gum may be frowned upon in some circles, but new research suggests it is actually good for the brain.
Regular chewers benefit from increased levels of alertness, a boost in thinking power and enjoy reaction times up to 10 percent faster.
Scientists from the National Institute of Radiological Sciences in Japan published their research in the journal Brain and Cognition.
They said the boost in brain power could be due to chewing increasing arousal and leading to temporary improvement in blood flow.
