Chief Jerry Dyer is forced to make some adjustments as he sees early signs of an increase in crime. A stabbing in north Fresno puts the homicide rate at 31 so far this year. That's well ahead of last years pace of 22.
It happened near Maroa and Minarets Avenue. Police say they have some strong leads and are close to naming a suspect. This recent uptick in violence is concerning for police chief Jerry Dyer. He says gang members are getting more aggressive. He also points to a failing criminal justice system and bad economy as contributing factors.
"I personalize crime because I believe Fresno entrusts us and...me to keep them safe. When there is a murder there is a side of me that feels personally responsible," said Dyer.
Even with the recent uptick in violence Dyer says violent crime is down overall by 4%.
