A 21-year-old Georgia mom remained behind bars Tuesday after authorities claimed they found her young son unsupervised, covered in his own waste and in a home described as so “filthy” that it smelled of “rotting food, urine and feces.”
And the reason why the 2-year-old’s mom, Stephanie Davis, wasn’t with him? She was in jail on suspicion of drunk driving after a night of partying, according to the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office.
Davis was charged with cruelty to children in the second degree and reckless conduct.
“This was a situation that could have ended quite differently. Thankfully, the child was located and is now safe,” Sheriff Ted Paxton said in a statement Monday.
Deputies arrived at Davis’ home at 8:40 a.m. Friday, after a family member called to say she believed Davis’ son was alone.
The family member, who lived more than an hour away, said she last spoke with Davis four hours earlier, when she called from the Roswell Police Department jail, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Davis had been arrested on DUI- and speeding-related charges, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
No one answered the door when deputies got to her home, although they reportedly saw a dog through the windows and could hear a child crying.
Given the circumstances, the deputies decided to climb through a window, Paxton said.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the child was allegedly trapped in a room with a safety device on the doorknob that didn’t allow him to open the door. The child was covered in feces and had removed his diaper, deputies said.
“One deputy got clothes and food from his home and gave it to the child, while another went to a local store to get the child something to drink,” Paxton said. “Deputies said it was clear that the child was very hungry.”
There were reportedly clothes strewn all over the floor, rotting food in the kitchen and more than 50 bags of garbage left on a porch.
