A construction worker in China is lucky to be alive after he was impaled with a cluster of metal bars on a construction site.

The man, named only as Zheng, was left with the poles sticking straight through his chest and out of his back after the accident on Monday in Taizhou, eastern China’s Zhejiang Province.

He had been working on a bridge when a rotating machine filled with metal bars hit a glitch and spat out the bars at high speed. With the bars still protruding, Zheng was transferred from two hospitals before he arrived at a facility equipped to treat him.

Doctors had to call in the help of firefighters to trim the length of the bars before removing them during surgery.

Zheng is now recovering in hospital.
