City workers' feuds with the Fresno city council were the theme of the day. It began with the transit union.
FAX bus drivers have been working without a contract for over a year. The city's demands for concessions left the negotiations at an impasse.
Union leaders say they've offered alternatives to the proposed 3% wage reduction. A fact finding mission also provided some alternatives to save the city money.
Bus drivers explained to the council how difficult their job is, and many took the opportunity to remind members that they haven't had a raise in four years. Local Transit Union President Rick Steitz said city leaders never made an effort to reach a compromise.
Legally, the the city council didn't have to. They voted 4 - 3 to impose the 3% cut and other work rule changes for one year.
Bus drivers were powerless to prevent the vote, but they may excercise another strong-arm tactic. Rumblings of "strike" could be heard as the council moved on to another agenda item.
