(Press Release) The Merced County Sheriff’s Office received a call from Mercy Hospital that an 18-year-old was brought in with multiple gunshot wounds. After investigators arrived, they discovered that just after 6:00 p.m. Wednesday evening, the victim was walking along Childs Avenue in Planada when a dark blue Chevy extended cab pickup with five Hispanic males in it, pulled up next to him and started firing.

The victim was struck by multiple rounds, with at least two bullets hitting him in the legs. The victim was transported to Mercy Hospital by an unknown witness and dropped off. The witness left before law enforcement could arrive.

The victim was taken to a Modesto hospital where he underwent surgery and is expected to recover. The victim is a validated gang member and investigators believe it was a gang related incident.

The suspect vehicle was spotted by Merced Police after the shooting in an alley off of 6th Street. The occupant of the vehicle took off running and was able to get away. A handgun was located inside the vehicle and it is believed to be the one used in the shooting.
