A Fresno County Sheriff's deputy is recovering after he was shot while cycling Tuesday on Friant Road just south of the town of Friant.

The deputy was off duty and in cycling gear at the time. Investigators say three people in a dark blue Suburban were driving north when the rear passenger shot him in the back with a rifle. Doctors can't remove the bullet because it's too close to his spine, but he is in good condition.

Deputies say the Suburban was last seen driving into Friant and it may have crossed into Madera County. They are not sure what the motive was.

Deputy Chris Curtice of the Fresno County Sheriff's Office said, "Even if this wasn't directed at him because he was in cycling gear. There's still a lot of cyclists that go up that road and we're concerned for their safety too now."

Authorities are searching for a dark blue Suburban, possibly a 1990's model GMC or Chevy. If you have any information you should call the Sheriff's Office.
