A local philanthropist is offering to help Fresno take over animal control from the SPCA. The owner of Derrel's Storage is willing to donate 12 acres of land for a new animal shelter.

Plans are already being drawn to construct the new facility. County Supervisor Henry Perea is hoping voters will pass a sales tax increase in 2014 to fund animal control efforts.

In the meantime, a temporary animal shelter should be operational by October 1st. The facility will only accept stray dogs. If the new long-term plan is passed, the permanent facility will also welcome cats.
