Did Jupiter Save Earth from a Devastating Asteroid?

September 11, 2012 Updated Sep 11, 2012 at 6:17 PM PDT

Jupiter, our celestial hero in the sky, may have taken one for the team Monday, saving the Earth from a not-so-heavenly collision.

An amateur astronomer from Wisconsin saw a bright flash Monday morning while he was watching the Giant Planet with his high-tech telescope.

Thinking it might have been a comet, he posted info about it online. Sure enough, another spacie who'd been recording Jupiter reviewed his footage and saw the flash, too. It's not clear if whatever struck Jupiter was heading for Earth — or if it even actually struck the planet — but the news has set space forums on fire today.

If it's true, thanks for lookin' out, big guy.
