Central valley woodcarvers gave "Freedom Canes" to disabled veterans Thursday morning.

The hand-carved eagle head canes were made to honor the veterans military service. The cane giveaway is an annual event at the Fresno VA hospital. Each cane is custom fitted to the recipient, and topped with a hand painted American eagle head.

Sal Gallegos received a cane and said, "I feel very honored. It's kind of a special thing, that I can consciously see organizations giving back to organizations. I have a very heartfelt appreciation for this. It is maybe a small symbol but it is a huge indication that we care for each other."

Each cane takes about three hours to make, and no two canes are alike because of the different types and cuts of wood used.
