A family who were trying to do their neighbors a friendly turn by giving away household items before their home went into foreclosure were rewarded by being robbed of all their belongings.

The Vercher family, from Woodstock, Georgia, lost their home of 20 years to foreclosure. Days before moving out, they placed a Craigslist ad for a giveaway to take place in the driveway of their small home to begin at 10am on Wednesday.

But big crowds showed up before the allotted time when there was no one home to supervise and the friendly giveaway turned into a free-for-all after their house was broken into.

Michael Vercher told NBC in Atlanta: 'Well, when we got to the house, I mean, pretty much -- this. Everything was gone. They came in and just tore the place up.'

By the time he arrived home for the scheduled 10am yard giveaway, there were hoards of people ransacking their soon-to-be foreclosed home and there was nothing he could do to stop them.
