The Dark Knight Rises was and is still expected to be a huge movie. According to Fandango, it has already sold out more than 2,000 show times nationwide. But will people who had planned on watching the movie its opening weekend still see it?
The Dark Knight Rises was set to be the second biggest money making U.S. movie debut of all time- an expected $198 million in its opening weekend. But the tragic shooting in Colorado has many moviegoers thinking twice about watching it.
“There are no words to express how horrendous this is and how it affects our state of mind. Whether we should bring the kids to the show or not,” said Fresno moviegoer Irmha Asso-Mendez.
The Dark Knight Rises was set to open in 6,300 screens internationally. It already banked $25 million in pre-sales. But will the successful trend continue? Theaters across the valley decided to continue screening the movie this weekend. At the Manchester Theater in Fresno, the lines kept long.
“We talked about it and thought we shouldn't even let the kids know that this happened, but we can't shield them from everything and sometimes we have to have these conversations as devastating as they are,” said Asso-Mendez.
“If it's going to happen it's going to happen. I'll just do my precautions when I come in,” expressed moviegoer Manuel Hernandez. It was his birthday. He said nothing could stop him from seeing the movie, “I just woke up, worked last night, I knew it was the first think I was going to do today is go here.”
Heading back to theaters after an act of terror is a challenge, and could easily hurt box office numbers.
But just like Batman, moviegoers, at least many in Fresno, aren't letting fear take over.
“It can happen anywhere. You can't let them scare you that way,” said Asso-Mendez.
