Before beginning his career California's Fairfield Fire Department on Friday, Anthony Bellamy had decided to take some time off to spend with his wife and newborn child.
It turns out his experience as a new father came in handy.
On his first shift he helped to deliver a healthy baby girl.
It began with a 9-1-1 call from a woman who said she was in labor early Friday morning.
When firefighters arrived about four minutes later crew members decided it was necessary to deliver the child at the home, and they turned to Bellamy and two of his colleagues.
"I'm like oh gosh, I'm not going to be able to make it to the hospital," said mom Candie Simmons.
Dad Sam Simmons, made the 9-1-1 call, but had no way of knowing his expectant wife would deliver just over ten minutes after he picked up the phone.
"Just before I was getting ready to push, my 9-year-old daughter said the paramedics are here," Simmons said.
Bellamy said it wasn't a call he expected to make on his first day on the job at Fire Station 40 in Fairfield.
"It was neat to hear the cries. It was a tight working space we were standing over one another," said Bellamy.
Bellamy recently graduated from the fire academy and said he was well prepared for the situation.
The Simmons said it showed as the family -- including baby Somalia Simmons -- rested comfortably at North Bay Medical Center.
"He was very patient. He knew what he was doing. I felt at ease," Simmons said.
