A Fresno county has been arrested on animal abuse charges after several horses he owned were found to malnourished and starving to death.

Dana Thomas Kahler was taken into custody after the horses, nineteen in all and all in various stages of malnourishment, were discovered just after 3:00 p.m. on Monday.

One of the horses, a two year old gelding, was lying in the middle of a stable in obvious distress and unable to get back to its feet and had to be euthanized.

Deputies said the 59-year-old Kahler was the owner of the horses and leased the land on 1800 block of Shepherd Ave., where the horses were found.

On Tuesday morning, SPCA officers were able to move the horses to another, undisclosed location.
