Fresno Man Arrested After Trying to Cash Stolen Check

(Press Release) A Fresno man arrested Saturday remains behind bars in Madera County – accused of trying to cash a stolen check in an Oakhurst bank.

Sergeant Matt Mollet and Deputy Robert Blehm took 42-year-old Anthony Charles Bell of Fresno into custody shortly after 4:00 p.m. Saturday. He claimed to be a transient.

Bell was sitting inside the bank when deputies arrived. Deputies were alerted to the fraud by bank officials who say the check Bell tried to cash had been reported stolen by a woman in Ahawahnee.

The victim reported her wallet (containing her driver’s license, credit cards and personal checks) stolen on January 22nd while she was at a restaurant in Ahwahnee.

Bell is accused of trying to cash one of those checks in the amount of $379 – payable to him.

When Deputies took him to custody they seized a glass smoking pipe commonly used to smoke methamphetamine, a syringe and his wallet which contained other checks reported stolen by the victim.

Bell was booked into Madera County Department of Corrections on suspicion of receiving known stolen property, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a hypodermic needle, forgery and commercial burglary. Bail set at $15,000.
